Historic Wings Field (LOM) is one of the oldest continuously operating airports in the United States. Located in Blue Bell (Montgomery County), Pennsylvania, it is a very convenient portal to downtown Philadelphia and is the closest airport to Plymouth Meeting, Fort Washington, Chestnut Hill, Willow Grove, Hatboro, King of Prussia, the Main Line, and Conshohocken. It lies just 1-1/2 miles north of the intersection of three major highways – the east-west Pennsylvania Turnpike, the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the Blue Route (I-476) with connections of the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) and I-95.
The FAA classifies Wings Field as a “general aviation reliever airport.” This privately-owned, public-use, non-towered airport is located 10 miles from center city Philadelphia and 18 miles north of Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). It operates under Philadelphia’s Class B airspace. It serves the vital interests and general aviation requirements of the northern suburbs of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area.
The airport consists of 217 acres of open space and is owned by the Wings Field Preservation Associates, L.P.
The airport’s 3,700’ long x 75’ wide runway can safely accommodate all general aviation aircraft up to small- to medium-sized turbine-powered aircraft under 22,000 lbs. It is equipped with Medium Intensity Runway Edge Lights (MIRL). Runways 6 and 24 both have RNAV (GPS) approaches, Runway End Identification Lighting (REIL), and Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI). A 0.7 mile long by 60’ wide taxiway that runs parallel to the runway is equipped with edge lighting systems.
It is important to note that, as a General Aviation Reliever Airport, Wings Field does not accommodate scheduled carrier operations. To maintain its role in serving the region’s small aircraft needs, the airport imposes weight restrictions that prohibit use of the airport by aircraft with operating weights in excess of 22,000 pounds MTOGW.
Wings Field is owned by Wings Field Preservation Associates, LP. The airport is operated by Montgomery County Aviation (MCA), a full-service fixed base operator (FBO) that operates Wings Field from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. Services include fueling, line services, crew cars, and conference room. The Driscoll Terminal Building, located at the top of Taxiway B in the ramp area, is a popular meeting place that provides a comfortable pilot and passenger waiting area; complimentary coffee, donuts, hot dogs, popcorn and snacks; a weather briefing center, two computers, high-speed wireless Internet, and vending services. Aircraft maintenance, charter, and catering services are available.
